Reflecting on digital project

This blog will expose a reflection of my digital project, Navigating India which is a text based interactive game. Eva came up with the idea and Aaron focused on creating the game. I really happy to work with my group members. Actually, I am new to the social media. From I do not know how to use Facebook to I create a Facebook page for our digital project. I have learnt a lot from the process of producing the project.  This was our first time to make a real project and put it on website and promoted it.

At the beginning, we were required to do some researches about India. I am not good at history as well as geography. I know nothing about India. After two weeks, we realized that what we researched is useless and the content is too big. In other words, we had not decided which group of people will be our audience. We wanted young people who interested in India or tourists who have a plan to visit India to play our game that they can get a brief introduction of India. So we decided that each of us chose a city to focused on. Producing the project is very hard. We made up the stories that referred to many different comments from the traveler website. I focused on the Mumbai. I used google map and did a lot of researches to create a travelling route.

We were in different tutorials so we only met once a week. Gmail and Whatsapp really helped us to deliver important information and ideas. But the my draft story doc with pictures that I send to Aaron was invalid which is really annoying.  Except my own part of story making, I created a Facebook page, a Sina Weibo page and a visual site promotion. It is not too hard to create it. Thanks to Eva’s innovative ideas and Aaron’s skillful creation that allowed our digital project ran successful.

Doubting castle 2: flipped lecture

A little sweet story about onion which I spent a lot of time in digital drawing.

Well, for my digital project. I would like to use photography instead of any digital drawing. Digital drawing can be created in Adobe illustrator CC which is a great software that be used to create animation. Dey taught me how to use the Adobe Illustrator CC. Meanwhile, I used the Wacom frequently this semester for my another course. I draw a lot of pictures by using Adobe Photoshop CC. I used the Illustrator to create the house shape and the windows and save as psd format and then import to Photoshop and created the other layers, such as the sky. I am going to make an animation footage that sky move slowly and the lights turn off one by one. However, I am not going to use drawing to create my digital story. Maybe can add some drawing into my promotion of digital story so as to attract audience.111

Doubting castle 2: flipped lecture

When drawing digitally, your first choice is bitmap (raster) or vector? Vector drawing is clean, precise, and it can look somewhat inhuman (although clever artists can overcome this). Some simple examples. That’s because it is the result of algorithms working out how to join two points together. Bitmap drawing tools replicate the pressure of your mouse, stylus or finger by translating that pressure into a series of tiny dots (pixels). The result can be much more like a hand-drawing – but it can also seem very crude in the hands of an unskilled user. Digital photographs are, ultimately, bitmaps.

Bridge – less river 2: website data

When I open my  Word Press blog, the recent statistics has been shown directly. Knowing what exactly happened this day and how many people visit my blog.  Obviously, WordPress is a good way to get some information from your peer. I really like to read my classmates articles that I followed because we are doing the same tasks. For example, for the Bridge – less river 2: website data, I can get some view points from Ailee’s blog and Stacey’s blog. I can leave comments if I want. What I found from the statistic is that views always more than visitors which means I have no traffic. In the last couple of weeks, there has been 2 visitors to my blog. The visitors who visit my blog surely are my tutor who marks our assignments. SO, how can I be ‘famous’?22

I think it is would be the same to the media strategy for our digital story. I followed some blogs which are recommended by  the site. Why they are famous? Their feedbacks are over hundred. Their websites are very specific. By which I mean, they are focusing on one thing they interested in. Such as health, photography, travel, etc. They had already know who is their audience.

A domain name and visual design are the tricky way to get more hits.  I had created a logo to improve my personal brand. D the initial letter of my website name Derawings. Getting a connection between other platforms is important. So the widgets seem useful to help users search my blogs and to connect to other forms of social media, such as Linkedin and Facebook.

Doubting castle 3: flipped lecture – Basic audio editing

Audio plays an important role in the broadcast. In addition, adding sounds into a film can create an impression of reality to audiences. A film editor, Walter Murch, who is also a sound designer, remarks ‘the most successful sounds seems not only to alter what the audience sees but to go further and trigger a kind of conceptual resonance between image and sound: the sound makes us see the image differently, and this new images makes us hear the sound differently, which in turns makes us see something else in the image, which makes us hear different things in the sound, and so on’ (Graeme 2009).

Combining Sound and Image together may create a new horizon as well as a different meaning. In my opinion, a successful movie should have its own background music which is just fitting with to express a certain atmosphere or a spirit. Take the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 for example, when I heard the background music Drink up me Hearties, I found that it is quite difficult to describe the state of my mind, but whatever it is, it helped me to focus on the scene and elicited my feelings. Moreover, the song brought me into the film and made me feel the aggressive,  powerful and strong enthusiasm to win.

Getting best sounds as you can when you are shooting is the basic requirement which can help you reduce some audio problems when you are editing. But if you really get some problem with the audio, problems can be solved by using Audacity.audacity-imported-track

Audacity is a free, open source, cross- platform software for recording and editing sounds. It can be used for all types of audio. For media student, it is really a good source to make a beautiful sound while edit a project.

These steps will introduce the basic steps commonly used when editing the contents of an audio file.
  1. Step 1: Find a file to edit.
  2. Step 2: Import the file into Audacity.
  3. Step 3: Look at the waveform.
  4. Step 4: Listen to the imported audio.
  5. Step 5: Create a 10-second clip from your audio.
  6. Step 6: Fade out the last second.

We will not to use Audacity for sound track editing with our digital story because we will not to consider adding any sound into the digital stroy. We are doing the text-based interactive game with image. The only sound we can add into the digital story is back ground music I suppose. But I’d like to learn more about audio editing which will be used in the future.

Audience Research

A completely planned audience research that engage with  a small group of  people can bring a detailed information of their personal experiences and thought to watching a performance. Audience research is a survey that could be done on Internet. The search engine ‘Duck Duck Go’ provide a great deal of information which may helps me to get some useful things about Mumbai. However, I do not think the engine can be used in our audience research. I used the normal way to do the research. The project can be more specific when we decide which group of people will be our audience. Such as the programming concept that the producer aimed children as their audience. Thus, they set the popular character and used the practical lesson to make a interesting snowflake so as to engage with the audience. Firstly, I considered the size of audience. For example, we focus on the tourist which helped us minify the scale of theme. That is easier to come up with an idea, and focusing on what we do next. After choosing a feasible field, we tried to explore the interesting things that tourist like. That is not to hard to carry out. As I mentioned before, we used hashtag to do the research which is much easy to find out something you want. Well, we have only 3 people in our group. So we decided to do something individually by planning for different field but based on the one theme. By which I mean, we did audience research separately cause we focused on different city. The format and the way we would publish it are also in our plan that we must take it into account. We decided to make a text-based interactive game, which probably will be published in facebook and twitter. So we have to do the research of the users of facebook and twitter who may interested in playing the text-based interactive game. Our conclusion of audience research we analyzed is the young person who interesting in and want to get some information about India before they travelling to India.

The Interpreter’s house 4: Hashtag research

“A hashtag is a type of label or metadata tag used on social network and microblogging services which makes it easier for users to find messages with a specific theme or content.”(Wikipedia)

I am really new to do research by using hashtags. I have always typed my topic or anything I want to research in the Google search bar. In order to find new trends which might relate to my topics I used Google+. The hashtags on Google+ reflect current trend and fashion which helped me to find some new information about Mumbai. I just typed in Mumbai and then a series of relevant information of Mumbai had been revealed on the screen. I clicked on the #Bollywood in the search box, a great deal of pictures and texts were on my screen.

new

I will use hashtags to promote my digital project and market it as well. In addition, I think this is a good way to engage with audience to collect feedback and comments. One thing I have realized is that we have to update hashtags daily because new hashtags are in the top, otherwise, the hashtags we create will be ignored.

Delectable Mountains 6: Programming concepts 2

This blog is reflecting on the 20 exercises I undertook which based on the Delectable Mountains 5: Programming concepts 1. At first, I followed instructions to stick colorful blocks together. It requires a good brain; however I was stuck in turn right 60 degree or 90 degree all the time. I found that was time wasting, so I gave up to do all the exercises but tried to make a beautiful snowflake in the end. I skipped 6 exercises which I thought are totally same. To be honest, I have no interest in codes. I thought the 20 exercises are enjoyable but useless for our digital storytelling except considering the media strategy of the programming concept. This is a good way to trap kids as their audience by making snowflakes by children selves and the character from the movie ‘Frozen’ that the group of programming designed are attractive as well.
